paper-trail prevents citation hallucination in academic research by enforcing a strict state machine (8 states) that requires PDF acquisition, anti-homonymy validation, and per-citation source verification before any reference can be cited. It provides a 10+ source acquisition cascade covering Crossref, arXiv, OpenAlex, Unpaywall, HAL, CORE, archive.org, PubMed, and others, with optional shadow-library sources (Sci-Hub, Anna's Archive) behind explicit opt-in, and generates audit receipts classifying each citation as VALID/ADJUST/INVALID/UNVERIFIABLE.
